On Style Icons

I have always adored ELLE UK, but when they chose to give their annual Style Icon Award to Emma Watson, I was somewhat confused.

Lately I've been thinking a lot about that word, style icon, mainly because it just keeps popping up everywhere - online, in magazines, in TV. Everyone's a style icon, from Bryanboy to the last Kardashian standing. Hollywood starlets, singers, bloggers, socialites (this last word is basically a fancy word for "unemployed", right?). They're no longer just celebrities - no, everyone and their dog is quickly acquiring the status of icon, a word that in the good ol' days was reserved for greats such as Diana Vreeland, Edie Sedgwick and Audrey Hepburn.

What do we actually mean by style icon today? What does it take to become one? In the 20s, Coco Chanel revolutioned women's apparel by dressing the ladies in pantsuits and fake jewellery. In the 50 and 60s, Audrey Hepburn inspired women around the world to slip into a LBD paired with ballet flats, a string of pearls and huge sunglasses. In the 70s and 80s, Vivienne Westwood married punk and haute couture. Those women created styles, started trends, reinvented fashion. Can we truly say that bloggers or famous people's daughters do the same thing today? A style icon is someone who creates something new, not someone who pays a stylist to find the most expensive dress out there. "Icon" is a big word - one that shouldn't be associated with a 20-year-old who's paid to be the face of a brand (in Emma's case, Burberry - and yes, of course I'm envious!) and dress in a way that the brand dictates. And let me just be clear on one thing: this is least of all about physical appearances. Mile-long legs and a plastic surgeon on speed dial do not an icon make.

On the other hand, I find it wrong to say that "today there are no style icons". Of course there are. They are the great designers with their own vision, such as Stella McCartney (who stays true to her beliefs by refusing to use leather or fur in her collections - how I love her) and amazing fashion editors such as Katie Grand and Kate Lanphear. People that are passionate about fashion, that know about style. Not daddy's little bleach-blonde girls flaunting It Bags "sent" to them by clueless fashion  houses. Let's choose our inspirations wisely, ladies, because after all, they are the beginning of our dreams.

  1. you're right, I think that style is not so related to fashion, this comes after...I mean style is having personality in what you do, not wearing designers' clothes from top to toe...I can't break down style from personality and mind.
    The clothes come after...
