Sex and Another City

Sognatelo.

After having stumbled upon this article, I got to thinking about Sex and the City and the life that I've always dreamed of living - Carrie Bradshaw's (well, with a slightly younger Mr. Big!). While the post linked above has been widely critiqued by the show's most avid fans, I (although I know every episode by heart) have to side with the Frenemy.  Unfortunately, I've only spent four days in NYC, so here are my conclusions on what Carrie's life would look like if she lived in Milan:

First of all, that apartment? With the walk-in closet? Honey, you must be high. I live in Milan's gorgeous Navigli area, but my apartment's about the size of a tuna can, and me and my boyfriend lose sleep on a monthly basis trying to figure out how the heck we're going to pay the rent. Carrie's apartment (a one-bedroom on Upper East Side, the Big Apple equivalent to our Brera) would cost, according to my (non-)expert knowledge, about 1300 euro. Hence, like most Milanese, native or adopted, her choices would be: a)living with her parents or b) sharing her space with about 300 Brazilian roommates.

And working as a writer? Welcome back to believing in fairytales. At the beginning of her so-called career, our Carrie would write by night only. By day she'd be a telemarketer for 5,25 euro an hour (that includes health benefits, sick leave and vacations). After a year or two, the big offer would come her way - an unpaid internship at a local newspaper. So, off we go by train and bus, an hour a day just to get to the office (yes dear, I said train, not cab), and of course an hour to get back to the hole in the wall that she shares with half of Brazil. Doesn't leave much time for Cosmos and brunches.

Fast forward to the moment when Carrie's finally writing her famous column. Having worked for national magazines, I believe her pay would be at about 100-150 euro a pop. Let's be generous, like Frenemy, and give her 200. That makes 800 euro a month. Take away at least 500 for rent (and you may not know this, but in Milan, the only living space you get for under 500 euro is under a bridge) and 100 for bills. What does that leave for new Manolos for every guy that doesn't call? Our heroine would spend her days dreaming of being able to afford any shoes, even Zara ones (...wait, that reminds me of someone).

Moral of the story: to quote the Frenemy, writing pays nothing! And the Milanese version of Carrie would be...well, me. A shorter, skinnier me with curly hair. But I do have something that she doesn't: a Mr Big minus the grey hairs and plus a six-pack! I don't know about you, but I'd trade in all my Manolos for that.
