The Little Grey and Blue Dress

Finalmente.

Today I wore one of my favorite dresses and I thought of destiny.

In September, I went on a girly weekend to Rome with my best friend. Walking around the shops, I spotted The Dress at Zara. Seeing me emerge from the fitting room, my friend commented that "that dress seemed made especially for me" and I fell in love at first sight in front of the Zara fitting-room mirrors. But, as some of you might already know, my wallet is so tiny that even Zara is too much sometimes, and The Dress was left hanging. The following month, with my paycheck safely on my bank account, I logged onto Zara.com looking for it, but it was obviously out of stock.

November. A rainy Milan afternoon. I had visited my boyfriend at work, and afterwards I was wandering around the shops of via Torino, making a stop at Zara. And who could have told me that The Dress would be peeking out at me from under a heap of caramel-colored coats? This time, the dilemma was in the size: the only one left was a L, and I swore to myself that the next time I saw something that made me fall in love, I would buy it immediately, even if it meant existing only on noodles from the Asian shop down the street for two weeks.

January, the day before the sales ( I can't stand the first day of the sales, as well as the second or the third, or any day after that: crowded, neverending lines and an endless supply of the only size left: XL) I went for a final look, never expecting to find The Dress, but sure enough there it was, a lonely XS waiting for me at the rack. It was mine immediately and passionately, without even stopping by the fitting rooms. And I didn't stop smiling even when, two weeks into the sales, I saw it hanging in the bigger Zara at corso Vittorio Emanuele - for half price.

I love and admire Coco Chanel, but I do have to disagree with her in one matter: The Dress, the one that exists in every woman's life, isn't necessarily black. Mine is grey and blue, with a wrap skirt and a slim brown belt. It comes from Zara in via Torino. It goes perfectly with my knee-high brown boots with chunky heels, as well as delicate summer sandals or edgy studded ballet flats. It's marvellous with a trench coat or a leather jacket. It's simply perfect. And it's all mine. Finally.
