On Talent.

Secondo me "quel qualcosa in piú" é una cavolata.

E sacrificio.

Yesterday I went with my guitarist boyfriend to an audition for musicians, where record-company people were talking about the word "talent", defining it as "that something that makes you unique" (also known throughout human history as "the x factor" and "that thing that sets you apart from everyone else").

The more I listen to music, read books, look at art and take in impressions, I find that I do not agree with this.

I don't believe in the "x factor". I think "that special something" is a load of crap. Nobody has it.

Think about it: every single musician, singer, dancer, artist, painter, sculptor, writer, actor, photographer, designer or any kind of creative person that's become a legend has gotten there because of qualities that are very definable and exact - not "that je ne sais quoi". My boyfriend listens to Yngwie Malmsteen because he's got crazy technique. I admire the work of Alexander McQueen because his clothes are beautifully made and designed. We both love Salvador Dalí for his painting style and his ideas. It's not a question of "x factor". It's just a question of being damn good at what you do.

If you take a look around you, you'll see that music, fashion, art, and cinema have all been invaded by "charismatic" people that maybe can't even sing. Or sew a dress. But they've got "that something!" They're "special"!

I say, screw this. Because then hey, where is my Oscar? I am sure as heck amazing at being "special".  Unfortunately, we have to put up with awful music, "hot" actors that have no clue, famous bloggers that can't spell and horrid books filled with cheap sex scenes just because everyone's too busy trying to be "special" instead of just getting good.

I believe that talent is that passion that makes you get up early in the morning. It's when you're not even noticing that it's midnight because you're so into what you're doing. You become really skillful at it because of your thirst and hunger to learn everything about that thing, about that world. The thought of fame, money, success never even crosses your mind. All you care about is being the best dancer/singer/stylist/drummer/graphic designer that you can be. In the end, what "sets you apart" from everyone else is that you're simply better at what you do.
That's talent. It's not called "x factor". It's called passion, and sacrifice.

Pia Toscano, cantante nel programma American Idol. Niente fronzoli, niente arie, niente "particolaritá". Solo un enorme talento.

Pia Toscano, American Idol singer. No frills, no weirdness, no trying to be "special". Just pure talent. Hope she wins.

E basta.

  5. Thanks Lola! I wasn't referring to the TV show though - I was talking about the concept of "having the X factor", which I find to be a load of crap, as opposed to actually being GOOD at something. Thanks for the follow! The header is actually a drawing of me that my boyfriend did!

  6. Maybe the X-factor is uniqueness. Obviously you need to be good at what you are doing to be successful, but that's not enough, you need to create something (within your field, be it music or fashion or whatever) that nobody else does, you need to cut out your niche.
Also hard work won't get you far if you don't like what you are doing, because you won't be able to give 100% then.
But what do I know about it? I'm not good at anything, and all too often not interested in anything.
