What makes a good editorial?

Sfogliando l'ultimo ELLE Italia mi sono chiesta come mai alcuni servizi prese dalle sue pagine mi rimangono in mente (anche se in fatto di moda rispecchiano poco i miei gusti) mentre altri passano inosservati. Di cosa è fatto un editorial fantastico?

•  Una storia. Semplice o complicata, romantica o trasgressiva, dolce o forte...ma la storia deve esserci.
• Abiti che raccontano la storia. Ed è proprio qui che il mestiere dello stylist diventa cruciale. Senza abiti che si completano tra di loro ed esprimono i concetti della storia, la magia non c'è.
• Una modella (o un modello!) che conosce l'arte dell'espressività. Non è un caso che tutte le modelle dicono di voler fare le attrici. Non è molto lontano da quello che fanno già.
• Una fotografia che cattura i momenti. Quando la modella salta, o sorride, o un abito che si muove in un certo modo, o un soffio di vento. Tutto si tratta di momenti.
• Ovviamente, anche il giusto trucco e capelli. Non so neanche contare il numero di volte quando ho visto un'ottima foto rovinata da pessime pettinature o trucchi da clown.
• Una location che fa da cornice alle fotografie e si intona con la storia senza essere più forte degli abiti.

Flipping through the pages of the latest issue of ELLE Italia, I thought about how come certain fashion editorials stay in my mind (even if the fashion itself is far from my taste) and others remain in the shadows. What makes a good editorial?

• A story. Simple or complicated, dark or romantic, sweet or tough...but there has to be a story.
• Clothes that tell the story. It's here that the work of the stylist is crucial. Without pieces that complete each other and express the concepts of the story, the magic isn't there.
• A model that masters the art of expression. We all roll our eyes when models say they'd like to be actresses, but there's a reason. Acting is quite close to what they already do.
• A photographer who captures the moments. When the model jumps or smiles, the movement of a fabric, the wind blowing...it's all about moments.
• Obviously, the right hair and makeup is important. I can't even begin to tell you about all the lovely editorials I've seen botched by horrid hair and/or clownish make-up.
• A location that frames the looks and blends with the story without overpowering it.
