Intelligent Chicklit - The Brightest Star in the Sky

When I say that Marian Keyes is one of my favorite writers, people look at me having me all figured out: ah, she's a chick-lit girl. She likes pink bows and chocolate and sleeps with cuddly little teddy bears. And dreams of her wedding day.

I must admit that I do dream about my wedding day and I adore chocolate, but I prefer black bows to pink ones. I'm all about the ethereal, floral dress with the tough biker boots. And the works of Marian Keyes are a perfect synthesis of that. Her works are girly and warm, but with a subtle dark undertone running through them, like that black double espresso that adds an edge to your morning chocolate croissant. The Brightest Star in the Sky is no exception.


Someone's watching over the lives of the people living at 66 Star Street in Dublin. And that someone has a mission. We just don't know what that is yet. But we do get to take a peek into the lives of the characters living in the old Irish building. There's Katie, a music PR dating a hunky workaholic. There's Lydia, a tough-as-nails taxi driver with family trouble. There's Jemima, an 88-year-old woman doting on her dog Grudge and her foster son, the angelic gardener Fionn, and there's Matt and Maeve, a couple very much in love, but with a dark, dark secret.

Warning: this book will not make you laugh as much as previous Marian Keyes works. Anyway, it's thoughtful and engaging, and ultimately unputdownable. I totally recommend it!



Quando io dico che Marian Keyes é una delle mie scrittrici preferite, le persone sembrano aver capito tutto di me: ah, lei é una ragazza chick-lit, una che legge libri rosa. Adora la cioccolata, sogna di incontrare il principe azzurro e va matta per qualsiasi indumento decorato da un fiocco rosa.

Ammetto di adorare la cioccolata. Il principe azzurro l'ho giá trovato, ma preferisco i fiocchi neri, forse anche con qualche borchia. Io sono una da abitino floreale abbinato a stivali da biker. Cosí sono i lavori di Marian Keyes: leggeri, divertenti e femminili, ma con un leggero sottofondo dark. Un libro di Marian Keyes ha il gusto di quell'espresso nero che aggiunge un tocco forte alla tua brioche alla crema. The Brightest Star in the Sky (mi dispiace, non ho idea del titolo italiano) non é un'eccezione.

Qualcuno sta osservando gli abitanti di Star Street 66, qualcuno con una missione. Ancora nnoon sappiamo qual'é, ma possiamo entrare nelle vite dei personaggi che abitano nel vecchio palazzo a Dublin. C'é Katie, una PR del mondo della musica innamorata di un uomo sposato...con il suo lavoro. C'é Lydia, una tassista con i capelli ricci, un carattere ribelle e una famiglia fuori controllo. C'é Jemima, 88 anni, che cerca di tenere a bada il figlio adottato Fionn, un giardiniere dalla chioma bionda. E ci sono Matt e Maeve, una coppia che condivide tanto amore ma anche un oscuro segreto.

Un avvertimento: questo libro non vi fará ridere quanto le opere precedenti della Keyes. Peró non vi fará neanche dormire, visto che non sarete in grado di metterlo giú. Ve lo consiglio!
